Season Opener Ice On or Ice Off
Hi Everyone
Hope life is treating you all well and you're all ready to fish! I know we are all getting ready and some have got out on the rivers before run off because they just couldn't wait. I know we are looking at a great water year and this bodes well for the fish as well.
I have talk with Damon Keen the Henrys Lake Manager about the spawning season and the upcoming fishing season. He had nothing but high hopes and we agree. We just hope Mother Nature is kind to us this fishing season. I was up there on Saturday and could see some fish working for some food. That was hard not to break out the fly rod and get after them. I will along with others have to wait a week. My wife and I were also on an anniversary outing and had promised not to take fishing gear. I actually listened for once ? . Old dogs can learn new tricks! Maybe it was that threat and the ice cold stare communicating, I will kill you that proved the difference. It might have been a good thing leaving the fly rod home with those fish working it was hard to walk away The spawning season went very well with an abundant of fish coming into the hatchery. Damon stated that they did very well in getting the eggs they needed for next year's needs. This last year's plant went well over all. We did have some loss in the hybrids due to a hatchery issue but still some good numbers. There were 1.4 million cutthroats, 145,000 hybrids and 100,000 Brook Trout planted. With the fish that are already in the lake and this last year's plants we should still maintain some good success fishing the lake. Damon Keen and the Idaho Fish and Game do such a great job make sure to pass that on to them. They do really work hard at making it all work.
The real story of the year is will we have ice off by the opening. As you can tell by the ice on Saturday May 17th it will be nip and tuck on ice out by the opening. I'm hoping we can get a boat on the lake somewhere by Saturday the 24th. It will be a day by day thing so those planning early trips might want to call for an update. The latest news as of Sunday night was that the ice was breaking up a little and the wind was helping. Imagine that! The wind on Henrys actually helping matters!
Sheridan Lake did better in getting rid of the ice. It had a lot of open water about three weeks ago with a week ago being all but gone. The water last week still was really cold at 45 degrees. The fish have been a little slow on the bit as a result. With this latest warmer weather we hope to have the water warmer and the bugs hatching along with the fish being a little more aggressive. It should really wind up quickly if the weather stays warm.
Upcoming for this year we are going to make it easier to get info on the lakes, fishing, what is working, flies and all things relating to fishing. We are going to try and include as many pictures as we can as well. We are going to get a BLOG going on our web site at www.bsflies.com. We will have day to day or at least every other day info on the BS Blog. Our computer guru Glade Gunther will have that up and running shortly. Until then I will step up the newsletter info and folks are always welcome to call.
